South Carolina's veterans nursing home bed shortage approaches 4,000

The injury left the veteran of three wars — World War II, Korea and Vietnam — unable to stand or walk without excruciating pain.

“He did take a few steps and we were encouraged,” his wife said of the treatment he received shortly after his fall. “But when they realized that he was not improving at the facility he was in, they told me to start looking for skilled care, long-term care. I never imagined that he would not come home again.”

With her husband of nearly 70 years likely bound to a wheelchair for the rest of his life, Elizabeth McCrary started the difficult process of finding a solution for the couple’s housing needs. After all, it took two nurses assistants and an electronic lift to get him from bed to his wheelchair. And at 88, his wife was in no shape to take on that challenge on a daily basis.

At first, the search was horrifying — at least financially.
